357 Sig Ammunition

357 sig ammo

.357 sig ammo is based upon the casing of .40 S&W ammo, with the primary variations between the two being a short neck and a sharp shoulder for the .357 sig.  Behind the creation of .357 sig ammo was a desire to create ballistics comparable to the .357 magnum cartridge when fired from a smaller, typically semi-automatic pistol.

The smaller nature of the .357 sig ammo cartridge offers a few distinct advantages.  First, the compact nature of .357 sig ammo allows for a shorter/smaller grip frame where the cartridge is chambered.  This is important because it reduces the overall size of the pistol grip, which many shooters find more comfortable.  Second, compared to its parent cartridge, the .357 sig ammo cartridge can effectively launch lighter bullets with similar muzzle velocitiy at higher speeds with less of a recoil.  This combination – again – is very beneficial to smaller shooters or shooters with smaller hands, which is part of the reason why the .357 sig ammo cartridge has risen to a degree of popularity.

Compared to .357 magnum ammo cartridges, the .357 sig ammo cartridge is loaded to an equal pressure level, which is notable for the smaller size of the cartridge.  To put this into context, .357 sig ammo is loaded 14 percent higher than .40 S&W ammo or 9mm ammo.

As far as this petite cartridge goes, the .357 sig ammo cartridge’s combination of high pressure, reasonable capacity for the case, and no barrel venting (which is different than .357 magnum revolvers)  allows the .357 sig ammo cartridge to generate A LOT of force for its size…similar, in fact, to the .40 S&W in terms of muzzle energy.

There’s a price to pay for this power in such a small package, however.  Muzzle blast is quite high.  That’s why, when compared to the .40 S&W, which can be chambered in the same pistols, the .357 sig ammo cartridge has only one clear advantage, which is a slight reduction in recoil.
